Previous : Day 7 – Flag Ranch to Lava Mountain (70miles)

Today was a tough one. A slight 1 mile paved road decent preceded a tough series of climbs. In fact 4000ft of todays ride was done in the first 25 miles!

Having reached the top it was a wide open expanse of nothingness. The Great Divide book did make mention of Grizzlies in this area. The sign I encountered would suggest it was true.

I would like to know what the term “special measures applies”

After descending the mountain I had been told the last 60 miles would be nice and flat and there was a coffee stop 30 miles down the road. Both of these were untrue. The road was flat, but it was washboarded and I had my first encounter with Wyomings notorious headwind!

As to the coffee shop.

I pushed on and reached Pinedale at 530pm. By now it was raining hard and I was feeling the effects of today’s ride.

I finally road into Boulder Creek campsite at 1815hrs. It had been a long day in the saddle and there were 2 more big days ahead.
